Love Your Enemies

Earlier today, Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts was hospitalized with what appeared to be a stroke, but now appears to have been some other kind of seizure.

I hope that Senator Kennedy has a speedy recovery and is well.

Sadly, I’ve seen a lot today that breaks my heart in how conservatives are handling the incident. Over at Conservative Libertarian Outpost, a part of the WordPress.com Political Blogger Alliance, you can actually see wishes for Ted Kennedy to die. For that matter, you can see the same wish extended to me, since I’m obviously a liberal.

On FreeRepublic, the moderators were kept very busy trying to keep the comments within the bounds of decency … The thread has since been locked. To be fair, there was a lot of good there, too. But the fact that people take delight in others’ suffering is a problem.

All told, this got me thinking about other things I’ve seen recently. Ann Coulter’s recent column includes the paragraph:

It is beyond outrageous for liberals to complain about the practice of linking Democrats to the national party when their calculated strategy in race after race in the red states has been to run Democratic candidates who appear to be Americans. They’re not Americans. They’re liberals! I don’t care how much hay is sticking out of their straw hats.

“They’re not Americans. They’re liberals!”

Frankly, that’s one of the most un-American things I’ve read in a long time. I find it unfathomable that anyone reads her column and takes it seriously. The ability to spew random hateful comments should not be mistaken for cognition.

Meanwhile, in Iraq, a soldier used a copy of the Qu’uran for target practice. Apparently, the soldier thought that we were getting along too well with the Iraqis and that al-Qaeda didn’t have enough propaganda material for recruiting purposes, so he decided to help them out by fostering the Crusader image. Nothing helps wins hearts and minds, after all, like showing that you have utter contempt for the local culture.

Of course, again, the folks on FreeRepublic were generally outraged that the US is apologizing.

There once was a time that conservatives professed Christian values. I would like to remind people of one of those values, which is apparently being ignored –

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

- Matthew 5:43-45 (NIV; copied courtesy of BibleGateway.com)

That’s Jesus speaking about enemies and the need to love them. I will not defend the principle, because I think it needs no defense. Jesus put it forward.

Do you think that it’s loving your enemies to wish a Senator dead because he differs with your politics? To shoot a religious book? If you can even think about defending this kind of debate, and this kind of argument, then don’t then tell me that you’re trying to defend any kind of Christian values or traditions.

And don’t call yourself pro-life if you wish Senator Kennedy dead, either. You’re not. For whatever reason, you might oppose abortion, but you’re not pro-life. Jamelle, another member of the Alliance who blogs at the United States of Jamerica, often puts forward the idea that there are pro-lifers who just want to control women. If your version of being pro-life includes wishing political foes dead, then maybe you’re the type of person of whom he is speaking. It is obviously not a belief in the inherent sacredness of life that motivates such comments.

I don’t pretend to be perfect on this kind of thing, but I do believe in the principle. I wish Ted Kennedy well, and I hope for his recovery. Sure, I’d love to see him out of the Senate. That doesn’t mean that I want him to die. (The FReepers who wished Kennedy a speedy recovery followed by a long retirement, by the way, are perfectly in-bounds, as far as I’m concerned.)

I do, by the way, want to remark on one blog that I found which handled the news of Senator Kennedy respectfully and appropriately. Ryan from Axis of Right displayed genuine grace in his post.

We may not agree with his politics, but during this episode he’s a fellow human being, not a political dartboard.

Right on, Ryan! That’s the way to do it. People of good character don’t kick their opponents when they’re down, and they don’t let emotions blind them to what is right and what is wrong.

To everyone — how do you argue? Why not take a moment before writing something and think about whether it’s really what you want to say about the subject, and about yourself? Is it really worth getting in that cheap shot, knowing how you’re going to look for taking it?

Are we so desperate to be rid of Ted Kennedy that we actually wish him to die of a stroke?

I’m reminded of a professor in college who took great delight in the death of Lee Atwater, and expressed his fervent hope that Mr. Atwater suffered for a long time. I learned a lot from that professor, but I always knew that he was not a person for whom I could have much respect … he took delight in the death of another man simply because of his politics. Do you really want to be that kind of person?

Just for clarification’s sake, I don’t think that all pro-lifers want to control women, only some. I’m sorry if that doesn’t come across as often as it should.

Similar response from the left-side of politics when Jerry Falwell died. I was disgusted at those dancing on Rev. Falwell’s grave (figuratively speaking). I am just as disgusted with so-called “conservatives” doing the same thing with Sen. Kennedy. It dawned on me today that he actually looks good for 76 years old and his schedule is amazing. Sure I want him out of the senate too, but I do not wish him ill.

  3. wickle Says:

Jamelle … yes, you’re right. I’m about to edit and put a “some” in front of “pro-lifers.” Heck, in your last post on the subject you practically bent over backwards to point out that you didn’t mean all of us. (I’m honored to have been your example, by the way.) Isn’t that the same thing I said I wished someone else had done in a post you cited? Sigh … I guess we’re all only human.

OneMom … Yes, it happened with Jerry Falwell and Pope John Paul II, as I recall. I can only say that at least most of those people don’t even pretend to be Christians. My criticism of them does lose a bit in the fact that I don’t expect Christian conduct from non-Christians. Not much of a defense, I know …

  4. Mr Pink Eyes Says:

I agree with onemom on this one. I find it despicable that someone would wish Ted Kennedy would die just because they don’t agree with him on the issues, however much the same reaction occurs on the left when prominent conservatives get sick also. I am not justifying it, I hope that my comment doesn’t make it appear as if I am. I just wanted to point out that this type of behavior on the blogs isn’t confined to conservatives.

  5. wickle Says:

Nope … you’re right. I’m writing about conservatives right now for two reasons: (1) it’s what I was seeing yesterday, and (2) conservatives are the ones usually moralizing about Christian issues.

This kind of thing is no less despicable whether the afflicted person is Ted Kennedy, Jerry Falwell, James Kennedy, Lee Atwater, Pope John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, Paul Tsongas, or anyone else.

Sorry if it appeared that I blame only cons. This is pretty universal among people who personalize too much of politics and get past principles into personal hatred — whether Right, Left, or otherwise.

  6. Ken Sawyer Says:

IF any other American citizen had done what he did by leaving Mary JO Kopechne to drown in that canal we would be still listed as a felon and therefore not be able to serve in the Senate.

    Beautiful article Wickle.

Still sad to do something like this in the first place. I mean was the Quran used only because it is a sensitive/holy scripture for Muslims? Howcome the soldier didn’t have anything else to use, You know, like A Bible, A puppy (as I know people are sensitive to puppies), maybe a toilet paper roll as Bryan is suggesting? I mean is American Army so poor that they are running out of regular target practice red dots??
Exactly so, there are lots of things a sniper can use for target practice, but there must have been something bothering him that caused him to do such an erratic act. Is it fascism, racism, anger, radicalism, you decide. In my opinion the soldier should be court martialed as he did do something that he very well knows is offensive and irrational for that particular culture. If the soldiers don’t know this, then they are not being trained properly for cultural insensitivies of the lands they occupy!

qazi63 — you’re so far off-topic that your comment is going nowhere.

Moreover, I have no interest in giving you that much space to help spread Michael Hoffman’s anti-Semitic bunk.

  9. Alfie Says:

I want to stay consistent in my blogging. This is a good post Wickle, a little diverse yet thorough. On three post points.
I hold you in respect due to your solid stance. We’ve touched on where our differences lie and I’m cool with that. You are solid on your views and that is definitely cool. You truly seem to talk and walk from your heart.
Abortion…I’m personally pro choice. My choice consists of choosing not to have a behavior that risks “unwanted” pregnancy. I personally am pained by the apparent lack on the part of values conservatives to do better on the pre abortion aspect of the issue.
As for the target practice with the Quran. I suspect the soldier intentionally did this hoping to be removed from the war. He clearly didn’t think out the risk he put his fellow soldiers at in his action though.

    i got this

Your posting privilege has been revoked.

    Reason:
    troll

what is wrong with this stupid forum?
i’ve posted a blog entry in wordpress to protest againt this forum! beside, i will make its notorious reputation wellknown to all chinese online communities

  11. wickle Says:

Mr. Sawyer … yes, we all know about Chappaquiddick. But there are boundaries of decency to which we should hold ourselves, whether Sen. Kennedy meets them or not.

    Shane … thank you.

Clari … If it makes you feel any better, I got banned from Free Republic about four years ago for discussing the number of Iraqis killed at checkpoints and speculating about how to apply pro-life values to the situation. FR is notorious for declaring anyone who presents questions as a troll.

Alfie … I didn’t realize you were pro-choice. That might explain why you cut Gov. Romney a lot more slack than I did on the pro-life issues. That makes a lot of sense!

However, you have a great point. A lot of values voters do get dogmatic about things, including resisting some ways that would actually help to prevent abortions. I haven’t written about that, but I was rereading a comment by Pistol Pete about it, Jamelle just blogged about it again, and now you’re bringing it up. Maybe it’s time I said something about my point of view.

I assume that you’re talking about sex education, and I do think that a combined approach — abstinence and contraception — is the way to go. There’s more to say about that, but I don’t think that it’s fodder for my comments section.
