An End to Waterboarding?

I was bickering with a friend of mine about whether Christians should support the use of waterboarding in the war on terrorism when I realized for certain that the practice is going to end. None of the three major Presidential candidates supports its use. Of the last candidates in the field, however major, there is only one supporter of the practice. Of Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Bill Richardson, and any number of “minor party” candidates, only Gov. Romney supports the interrogation method. That was one more reason why I knew I could never support him.

I remarked that we called waterboarding a war crime when the Japanese did it to us. He simply didn’t believe me. So, as I e-mail the links to him, let me also post it here in case you don’t believe me. Read the rest of this entry »

Jay Rockefeller’s Pointless Apology

Sen. Jay Rockefeller has apologized for insulting Sen. John McCain. I suppose that someone is supposed to care. The thing is, he now pretty much owes apologies to thousands of veterans for his comments.

Interestingly, NHPR had a show this morning interviewing a University of NH philosophy professor who has recently published a book about apologies and their nature, including his notes about the irrelevance of saying “I’m sorry” when it’s not meant. I’ll get back to that later …

Sen. Rockefeller (D-WV) had this to say about John McCain’s military service:

“McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit. What happened when they [the missiles] get to the ground? He doesn’t know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues.” Read the rest of this entry »
