Sam Brownback comments on Mike Huckabee
January 3, 2008 — wickleSen. Brownback did endorse Sen. John McCain in the nomination bid, and I don’t think that this article should be taken as a change in that position.
But it does show something important: that people can still respect those with whom they disagree. Gov. Huckabee has been nothing less than respectful to his opponents, with a few exceptions (his intent to put out a negative ad and mailings, for example). Sen. Brownback is a good man, and shows the same kind of respect.
Some candidates are out to destroy their rivals. Others want to build up the nation. Tonight, the process of determining who is going to lead this nation really gets going. I would like us to build a better, stronger nation. I’m not interested in destroying anyone else. I don’t want a President who’s interested in destroying anyone else for having different ideas.
This is a mark of character, and one that I admire tremendously.
And so, I’d like to thank Sen. Brownback for being able to say a kind word about a candidate even when he hasn’t put his support behind him. That’s refreshing, and it’s honest.
