Not entirely about me, but still it’s kind of fun!
Over at ComMITTed to Romney (which, by the way, is kind of a clever name and a pretty interesting blog — I don’t think they know that I read them) I have been part of the target in a hit piece!
Actually, it’s sort of a hit on everyone who likes Mike Huckabee, which has been a running theme at ComMITTed lately, but that’s to be expected. Still, I’m feeling the need for an ego boost today, so I’m going to pretend that it’s about me and his jabs at Michael Medved are just side notes.
I was especially fond of this, nestled in among his (actually rather interesting and well-spoken) discussion of school vouchers:
I think it is fun to see a website called, “A True Believer’s Weblog” that shows a picture of Gomer Pile, and right below it a logo for the “ top Baptist 1000″ sites web –ring. And guess what? The “true believer” supports Huckabee
Yes, there it is again … it’s another shot at Huckabee and his supporters based on our mindless subservience to our religion.
Or, perhaps, because I’m a Baptist, I have to vote for someone else just to prove that I’m not just acting on bigotry. You know what? I’m also a white male. Maybe I should write in Cynthia McKinney just to prove that I’m not basing my vote on some prejudice?
Maybe ComMITTed could concoct a more liberal-sounding argument?
Folks, my point — let’s not eat each other. Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee each appeal primarily to the same voters — social conservatives. Gov. Romney has more support from the Club for Growth, Wall Street Journal, and (as National Review called itself) “metropolitan conservatives.” Mike Huckabee is resonating better with a more-populist message.
Why don’t we let ideas reign?
I’ve taken a couple (not that many, I think) jabs here at Gov. Romney. I’ll admit it. None, by the way, based on Mormonism.
I haven’t, though, accused anyone of supporting Gov. Romney just because they’re mindlessly obedient to the Church of LDS or the party establishment. It’s nice to see that the same courtesy is extended in return …
… or something like that.
An amusing irony was that I sat down this morning scripting a post about an interview I heard yesterday — Gov. Romney was being quizzed about the LDS Church former position on race relations. My point was that Romney wasn’t in control of the policy, and I haven’t seen anything in his life that tells me he’s racist — clearly there were dissident Mormons even when LDS had its bad policy in place. I take him at his word that he was one of them.
Oh, well … in a campaign in which Republicans are attacking people for being Christians (or the scandalous appearance of a shelf that looks sort of like A CROSS! GASP!), I no longer know what to think of the world.
I hope that some of these attacks represent a flailing Romney campaign, lashing out and attacking with anything they can think of. If it really represents a shift in Republican thought — either at the grassroots or leadership level — then the repercussions could be very, very interesting.
