I’m not sure how true this is, but it’s certainly an interesting and — if I may say so — cool development:

British say invisible tank could be operational by 2012

A Pentagon advisor is skeptical about a new technology being developed by the British that is like something out of a James Bond movie.

The British military has unveiled a prototype-cloaking device that uses cameras and projectors to beam images of the surrounding landscape onto a tank — resulting in a virtually invisible tank. In secret trials the Army said it has made a vehicle completely disappear and predicted that an invisible tank would be ready for service by 2012. Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis (USA-Ret.) says it is an interesting concept.

“Anything that can reduce the visible presence, and therefore make it more difficult to engage by the enemy, is something we want to seek out,” he comments. “And if it’s manageable financially, then of course you would want to consider that.”

But Maginnis is not ready to jump on the bandwagon just yet. “I’m somewhat skeptical, given that you have to field test these things in the rain and in the dust and in the severe weather conditions to see whether or not the various devices that would create an invisible target are quite possible,” he states.

According to Maginnis, there are times when it is desirable to be visible. “If part of the effect is the shock and the awe of seeing tanks charging at you at 50 miles an hour, firing weapons and suppressing the enemy, sometimes that’s something you want and you don’t want it to be invisible. So it’s really a mixed bag,” says the former combat officer.

The brains behind the technology, Professor Sir John Pendry of Imperial College in London, says the next stage is to make the tank invisible without the projectors and cameras — which he says is “intricate and complicated, but possible.”
