Mike Huckabee flips … but gets back on course

Look at it how you will.

This afternoon, Mike Huckabee held a press conference to unveil his new negative ad against Mitt Romney — in which he was going to defend both himself and John McCain, and counter-attack.

The ad would have been a change of course in the campaign, moving to more of an attack focus. However, he decided just before the press conference not to release it. Read the rest of this entry »

“National Treasure 2″ - A review

I am not a particular fan of Nicolas Cage or his movies. For the most part, his acting doesn’t impress me.

I say this so that the rest of my comments about this movie will have more impact, removed from the prospect that I’m merely star-struck by a big name, as might happen if someone like Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, or such was in it.

Yesterday, my wife and I took the boys to see “Book of Secrets,” the second of the “National Treasure” movies. It was good. Read the rest of this entry »

The lamest recall in the history of the world …

When we think of recalls, we tend to think of real dangerous products. another_china_recall.jpg

Things with poor designs, lead paint, or such. I’ve been meaning to mention this particular recall for some time, but haven’t gotten around to it until now … the “recall” on the Bumbo Baby Seat. Read the rest of this entry »

Types of Activists

Being active in this campaign, and reading blogs, talking to people, and such, I have determined that there are three main types of activists. Note, of course, that an activist is someone who is involved at some level in a campaign — just liking a candidate isn’t enough. I’m talking about people who are active in some real way.

I’m also not talking about levels of activity. I’m talking about personalities and methods. Read the rest of this entry »

About the NH-NEA

I am tired of hearing about the “fact” that Mike Huckabee has been endorsed by the NH affiliate of the National Education Association, and so that proves that he’s really a liberal.

So, let me work through a few bits of reality here. Read the rest of this entry »

In defense of Ron Paul … sort of

Yes, after taking several days off for Christmas, I come back … to defend Ron Paul. The world has turned upside down …

Yesterday’s “Best of the Web” column from Opinion Journal (which has just finished a week of hit pieces on Mike Huckabee — rebutted day by day) called Ron Paul a “phony libertarian.” Read the rest of this entry »

Professional cynics

Yes, I’m going back to Gov. Huckabee and the infamous, dreaded “floating cross.”

Virtually no one seems to have seen it until it was pointed out to them. Peggy Noonan writes about this in her column today from Opinion Journal:

I didn’t see the famous floating cross. What I saw when I watched Mike Huckabee’s Christmas commercial was a nice man in a sweater sitting next to a brightly lit tree. He had easy warmth and big brown puppy-dog eyes, and he talked about taking a break from politics to remember the peace and joy of the season. Sounds good to me.

She then goes on to say that it was on her second viewing that she saw the sinister, evil, divisive, and nefarious “cross” made out of a bookcase.

I think that what we have here is a non-issue for normal people. Political junkies see it … and political insiders see it. Read the rest of this entry »

Political calculations and wasting votes

I’ve been involved in some conversations with various people, and I was asked about whether it’s better for evangelicals to bail out on Mike Huckabee now, rather than see him nominated, lose the general election, and suffer the recriminations. The establishment party power-brokers and the fiscal conservative/libertarians would love to be able to break the religious right’s hold on power by pointing to a loss blamed squarely on the social conservatives. Trucking for Huck, part IV

As I’ve noted, James Taranto is spending this week (which ends today, he’s heading off on vacation … probably because he’s terrified of my blog tearing him apart again …) writing hit pieces on Mike Huckabee. I should have known that he was going to end up with the religious attack. I really should have, but I didn’t guess it ahead of time.

Ah, well …

Anyway, Merry Christmas (*), Mr. Taranto. I’ll look forward to reading your column again when you’re back …

But here here’s his column from Thursday (which was today when I started writing it): Read the rest of this entry »

More floating crosses!

In light of the accusations that Mike Huckabee was attempting to use subliminal messages to exploit Christian sympathies, thought that I might as well admit to you what I’ve been up to, on behalf of the Mike Huckabee campaign. You see, I’ve become the official “floating cross positioner” in my area, arranging subliminal floating crosses in various places. This way, no one can help but think of Christianity at all times

I started with: Read the rest of this entry »
