Still Unanswered …
November 14, 2007 — wickleI have been rewatching portions of the Values Voter Debate, partly to see if I can figure out where on earth Ron Paul’s campaign gets the idea that he best serves the interests of social conservatives.
However, I also watched the section of “Unanswered Questions.”
The VVD had a final question for each candidate, tailored specifically to that candidate. The idea was to make them hard questions to challenge each candidate.
For Rudy Giuliani, the question was asked by Teresa Ippoliti.
My name is Teresa Ippoliti. Eighteen years ago, an abortionist was hired to kill me, but I survived. I was wrapped in newspaper and tossed on a shelf struggling for my life. Nuns came and rescued me, took me to a hospital where I stayed for two months. I was then adopted by my heroic mom and dad. Mayor Giuliani, your position on abortion would have left me dead. Now that you see me, Mr. Giuliani, do you honesty still believe an abortionist had a right to kill me?
We talk about abortion, we debate it as an issue. I’ve been told recently that abortion has to be subordinate to Federalist principles, and Fred Thompson claims to be 100% pro-life while not caring what policies states pass on abortion.
There are those who argue that Rudy Giuliani is better than Hillary Clinton for some reason or another …
But I come back to that question from Miss Ippoliti. Mayor Giuliani would have permitted her death. His position is based on the idea that he didn’t value her life at the time she was nearly killed and left to die.
This is not merely a political issue. This is not some abstract concept to be debated casually. We are discussing the killing of human beings, and we are discussing it relative to other fiscal, philosophical, and pragmatic concerns.
Shame on us.
