Mukasey Confirmed

I was wrong … and that’s twice in one day that I have to admit it.

Judge Michael Mukasey has been confirmed by the Senate to his new job as Attorney General. I had predicted that his confirmation would be derailed in the partisan bickering between President Bush and the Senate. This would be particularly unwise given the fact that Judge Mukasey has taken stands against the Bush administration in the past. Unlike Alberto Gonzalez, Mukasey isn’t just a buddy and lackey of George W. Bush. His actually appears to be a good appointment.

The Senate did the right thing, eventually, confirming him. This is what I predicted would not happen. I therefore admit that I was wrong. I console myself with the fact that we appear to have a good Attorney General taking office. That does take a lot of the sting out of the wound. Read the rest of this entry »

In Memoriam: Earl F. Dodge

Longtime president of the Prohibition Party, and 6-time Presidential candidate Earl F. Dodge passed away on Wednesday, 11-7. He was 74 years old.

I had incorrectly stated that Mr. Dodge was not running in 2008 … Thank you to Mr. Dodge’s son, Calvin, for setting me straight and for letting me know that his father had passed away.

Born on Christmas Eve in 1932, Earl Dodge joined the Prohibition Party at the age of 19. He has been active in issues all his life, working with various patriotic groups, his church, pro-life groups, and other temperance organizations.

Whatever one’s opinion of Earl Dodge or his cause, I think the man deserves respect for standing hard and fast for his beliefs.

As I have noted, the Prohibition Party platform is one with which I tend to agree on most issues … though even as a non-drinker Im not sure about prohibition itself.

My condolences and prayers are with the Dodge family in their loss.

Christian Appeasement

(I have written and re-written something to this effect several times over the years. This incarnation was written about six months ago, but I came across it and decided that it would make a good post.)

Everyone knows that Christians are active in politics, and everyone knows that we’re all Republicans, right? After all, it is the Republicans who stand for those things that God would love – printing “In God We Trust” on our currency, prayer in schools, abolishing abortion, preventing gay marriage, low marginal income tax rates for millionaires, the right of corporations to pay their workers as little as the market might bear, and making sure that if anyone has the power to kill every human being on the face of the earth, it’s the U. S. of A..

Worded that way, it doesn’t seem to make much sense, does it? Read the rest of this entry »
