Our first campaign event
November 3, 2007 — wickleI’m pretty sure that my baby Eagle (for the origin of that name, refer to “What’s with Wickle?”) has now become the youngest political activist in New Hampshire. Yesterday afternoon, she and I went to a sign-wave in Concord.
That’s not to be confused with a sine wave, which is something else entirely.
Anyway … at 93 days old, she was certainly the youngest person there. The supporters of a mayoral candidate looked at us arrive and one complained, “Oh, you brought a baby, how are we supposed to compete with THAT?”
Then she cooed, and everyone agreed she’s adorable. Let’s face it … some things in politics unite.
Anyway … one of the Huckabee staffers remarked that Eagle must be the youngest Republican ever. I gently corrected her and said that Eagle is a conservative Independent. Her main issues of concern are that she’s pro-life (being especially close with the unborn, having been one very recently) and likes elephants (her little music box is a green elephant … actually, it’s one that was mine when I was a baby).
Maybe she is a Republican, after all.
Anyway … Talking to one of the other volunteers, we were comparing merits of Mike Huckabee. For each of us, it’s the first time we’ve been active in campaigns, at least in a long time. (She mentioned having been a supporter of Ross Perot in 1992.)
We also discussed the various things that drew us to Mike Huckabee in the first place — his sense of humor, his honesty, his genuine faith, that he means what he says, and that he doesn’t try to dance around issues in order to be politically correct. He simply speaks his mind. He also doesn’t speak ill of the other candidates. He puts his own positives out there, and asks you to accept them. He doesn’t need to call Mitt Romney a two-faced flip-flopper or any such thing … the closest he comes is when he says, “I am, and always have been, pro-life.” That’s rather subtle, and it prevents burning the bridge.
Frankly, this demonstrates a political and diplomatic skill that I don’t see from the other candidates … one more reason to like Mike Huckabee.
It was a very good time, really. I got to talk with a couple other Huckabee supporters, who now very much want to meet my wife.
My daughter was getting restless (mostly fighting sleep) while we were there. This allowed me to demonstrate my ability to hold a sign and a baby while holding a bottle in her mouth. I also began making up her new lullaby, fitting into the campaign theme. “M-I-K-E Huckabee, P-R-E-S-I-D-E-N-T …,” although I didn’t quite finish it or make it fit perfectly to the tune of the traditional alphabet song.
I might get it right and get back to you on this. I’ll also pass on our observations of drivers through North Main Street in Concord. Let’s just say … I like my smaller town. It’s a lot safer.
