In 1992, there was much speculation that Mario Cuomo was going to jump into the Democratic primary. Polls were taken including him vs. various Republican candidates, he was compared to his potential Democratic rivals — Paul Tsongas, Jerry Brown, Bob Kerrey, Tom Harkin, and that other Arkansas governor … whatever his name was …
Gov. Cuomo eventually decided that he didn’t want to miss “Full House” or “MacGyver,” I guess, and opted not to jump into the race.
As I look at the Fred Thompson campaign since he finally got around to announcing, I have to wonder whether he should have followed Cuomo’s lead. After he said that he wanted one-on-one debates, he declined Mike Huckabee’s invitation to have one. In a recent appearance, he was asked about the Terri Schiavo case from 1995. He said that he didn’t remember the particulars.
In Thursday’s column, George Will chronicled several other situations about which Senator Thompson seems not to know his own, much less anyone else’s, stated positions.
A lot of conservatives were looking forward to Fred Thompson entering the race … Having seen his performance over the past week and a half, I can’t say that I’m impressed.
